The records are divided into three series. Series I contains reports, mostly annual reports of expenditures and library additions. Included is Walter Wente's 1947 detailed survey report. Series II contains files of annual budgets. Series III contains office files.
The records contain biographical information (including a copy of his Reminiscences) and correspondence. The collection includes many of his monthly reports to the Mission Board, along with summaries, which he based on his notebooks of daily activities. Some of these reports are in German and in his handwriting. He also recorded on to note cards, arranged by city, all of the worship services he conducted; sometime in the past these cards were redistributed into the District's congregations files.
Not many records survived from the presidency of Dr. Sylwester. Extant records include correspondence from 1924-1937 (predominantly with Synodical officials), various office documents, documents relating to his career (including some correspondence), records of his campus trees project, and various biographical items (especially from his 50th anniversary as a professor  and 90th birthday  celebrations). The collection also includes several histories of the Sylwester family, especially in relation to Concordia University.
The Thomas Coates papers are mostly correspondence, but they also contain his office files as well as reports about various aspects of the school, essays, articles, sermons delivered in chapel and elsewhere, and devotions. Notable among the sermons was his farewell sermon to the student body on June 5, 1957, entitled The Cloak, the Books, and the Parchments.
The papers consist mostly of his correspondence with the Board for Higher Education of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, subject files, some general correspondence, sermons, and reports from his office to various agencies.
The records consist of minutes of the meetings of the Educational Policies Committee and its successor, in 1985, the Academic Policies Committee. This committee reviewed proposed changes in curriculum and other academic policies for presentation to the plenary faculty.
The folders contain mostly correspondence to and from Paul M. Schmidt. The topics in the letters include matters of financing for churches receiving subsidy, conflict mediation, and reports on the current status of church programs. Occasionally documents from significant events in the history of the congregations, meeting minutes, and statistical reports also appear.
