Erickson is a dry goods store owner in Black Earth, Wisconsin with a wife and family of 4 daughters: Gunda, Menona and Mendota (twins Nona and Dota), and Aggie. Erickson was also active in the community and his church, serving as town treasurer, town supervisor, and school board director. The entries give detailed weather reports first followed by entries on the community, his family's health, outings, etc. The family had poor health and Mendota died in June 1874. Erickson and his wife suffer chronic conditions, his appearing to be asthma. He comments on local and national events and keeps up with national public events through newspapers.
