This sketchbook contains 34 drawings in pencil, watercolor, or both. Most drawings depict landscapes or views of historic buildings. Each has a caption and a date written in pencil. Two drawings dated 1885 portray Egg Harbor, NJ and Beach Harbor, NJ. The remaining drawings apparently document a trip to the Middle East and Europe in 1886. Views include Mount Olive near Jerusalem; Mt. Tabor east of Nazareth; Tiberia; the south end of the Sea of Galilee; the Temple of the Sun at Baalbec; Cyprus; the small Greek island of Pondikonision off the coast of Crete; Bellagio, Italy; Bergun, Switzerland; and "Ganz" (probably Ganzlin, Germany)

Collection comprises papers of American illustrator and author John O'Hara Cosgrave, and includes representations of nearly all phases of Cosgrave's work. Included are numerous drawings, prints, and other illustrations of ships, sketch books, book illustrations, book jacket illustrations, Christmas cards, advertising art, and magazine illustrations. There is some professional correspondence, 1936-1970, and a series of letters, 1952-1961, to Mary Silva Cosgrave, who worked as children's editor of Houghton Mifflin as Mary Silva; much of her correspondence is included with the collection. The collection includes the entire production (original illustrations, tracings, dummies, and notes) for Cosgrave's best known book, America sails the seas (New York, 1962).
