Five drawings by Shoshannah, probably created during the 1940s or 1950s, intended to be used as illustrations in books or on book jackets -- Two of the drawings are mock-ups for book jacket designs for a mystery novel by John Dickson Carr, "Death turns the tables", first published in 1941. Both drawings (17 x 11 cm.) are done in gouache, pastel, and ink, and are matted in off-white mat board 28 x 19 cm. One is covered with a leaf of guard tissue. A mock-up for a book jacket for "Divide the night" by Donald Honig, in gouache on paper (19 x 23 cm.) is stapled to off-white mat board 26 x 31 cm, and overlaid with one sheet each of clear mylar and guard tissue. Also included are leaves of page proofs of a children's nursery rhyme book (23 x 17 cm.), to which have been added original pen-and-ink sketches by Shoshannah. Finally, there is a pencil portrait of the writer Meridel Le Sueur, signed by the artist, and dated "early '40's, before World War II.".
The collection contains original artwork for book jackets and lettering by Skaggs and others, notably William Addison Dwiggins. There is a group of printed book jackets designed by Skaggs. Also contains correspondence from numerous other calligraphers, artists and designers (Oswald Bruce Cooper and Raymond F. DaBoll), as well as printed ephemera by them
