The papers consist of a memoir written by Robert B. Arvin describing his United States (U.S.) Army service with E Troop, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 11th Light Infantry Brigade in Hawaii and Vietnam from July 1966 to January 1969. In the memoir, Arvin discusses his decision to enlist, his training and life in Hawaii, the organization of his unit, its equipment, and preparations to deploy to Vietnam. He talks about military leadership, in particular his first sergeant (First Sergeant Vasquez). He shares several stories of causing trouble, especially when drinking, and how he was assigned extra duties as punishment for his behavior. Arvin describes "Bronco Base" (Landing Zone [LZ] Bronco) and Duc Pho, Vietnam; his living arrangements; C-rations and other food; and coping with fear and boredom while in Vietnam.
