This collection consists of official papers which portray the activities of the U.S. Army in the Pacific Northwest (principally Oregon). Eighteen boxes and sixteen volumes contain official correspondence, orders, post returns, quartermaster reports, and two letterbooks largely for the post of Fort Dalles, Oregon. Subject matter in the collection includes the operation of Forts Dalles, Simcoe, Vancouver, and Yamhill and also various Indian wars and campaigns, such as the Yakima expeditions (1855 & 1858), the Snake/Shoshone campaigns (1855-64), the Modoc War (1873), the Nez PerceĢ War, and the Bannock War (1878). Significant persons represented in the collection include John T. Apperson, Edward R.S. Canby, Chief Joseph, George B. Currey, O.O. Howard, Winfield Scott, and George Wright

The manuscript is an exceedingly interesting collection of historical letters addrsesed to and written by Colonel Hugh Hughes, Commanding General at West Point and Quarter Master General of the State of New York. They are all copies of the originals, the greater part being copied by Henry Peckwell, clerk. Most of the letters are requests for supplies for the Continental army, over which Colonel Hughes had supervision

Details include the date of arrival, name of the vessel, nation and class, date reported, number of manifests, and other remarks. There is a tab for each letter of the alphabet, except for the letters "V, W, X, Y, and Z," and within each tab, the entries are organized chronologically
