The memoir starts with a brief description of Martin Bauer's family background, and then turns to his childhood. Martin Bauer was baptized as a child, although both parents were Jewish. He describes his education years and his first jobs. Anschluss is mentioned briefly, then the efforts to obtain visas. Kristallnacht, the pogrom of November 1938, is described in detail: Martin Bauer was arrested after reporting at a local police station. He was forced to stay for a few nights at a local school with dozens of others people under very bad conditions. They were molested by the Nazi guards. After showing papers of emigration, he was released. In January 1939, the family left from Rotterdam, Holland, for Australia. After some time, he found a job in his field. He joined the army and later worked in the civil service.
