Preliminary organizational meeting held 17 Sept. 1851 at the Niagara Square Baptist Church, Buffalo, N.Y. The Academy was formed for the "mutual improvement of its members in the practice of music", especially sacred music. Anyone could become a member by paying dues; members could attend all the public and private rehearsals. The first public rehearsal was held at Central Presbyterian Church on 23 Dec. 1851. By Feb. 1852 there were 264 members
