This paper will address two scandal-ridden works, both of which represent high-points in radical organ composition in their contexts. György Ligeti’s Volumina shocked the organ world in 1962. This work, which provided my first exhilarating encounter with avant-garde organ music, will serve as a reference point as I discuss the European and Norwegian contexts for Egil Hovland’s Elementa pro Organo, Op. 52, of 1965. Why did these works cause scandals, including concert cancellations and media headlines? Did they come out of the blue, or were they natural products of the tradition of organ composition and the musical milieu of the 1960s? The paper will conclude with a comparison of compositional techniques in Volumina and Elementa, addressing elements of invention and connections to tradition
