Military postcards-- postcards of training exercises, camps, and materiel can be used as both propaganda and as a way for military personnel to show family and friends glimpses of their lives. Novelty and comic cards also allow military personnel to connect with others. The postcards collected here include some printed or sent before March 1, 1907, when the US Postal Service allowed citizens to write on the back of the postcard, on the divided back. In addition to postcards from the Hampton Roads military bases, N.A.S. Oceana; Fort Monroe; Fort Story; Norfolk Naval Base; and St. Helena Training Station (Berkeley section of Norfolk, WWI era), there are some from Camp Peary (York County), including Seabees at work (World War II era) and Camp Humphreys (Now Ft. Belvoir, Fairfax County) soldiers "in line for mess" (World War I era). One postcard from NAS Oceana picturing an F-18 jet is printing entirely wood.
