The daily subtotals for each fund's disbursements, balances, and receipts are entered in columns across each page. Besides the general cash account for the "commonwealth," the following funds or accounts head the columns: Literary Fund, James River Company (in the first volume), Board of Public Works (Internal Improvement Fund), North Western Turnpike, and the Sinking Fund

Volume records an assortment of accounts. It was begun as a blotter (1823) for cash deposited to the credit of the Literary Fund, the Board of Public Works (Internal Improvement Fund), and the James River Company. The major portion of the volume is taken up by the accounts of the Society of the Cincinnati Pension Fund (1828-1842), the Washington Monument Fund (1828-1844), and the administrators of the estate of Jerman Baker, late treasurer (1829-1833). The volume also contains graffiti written by soldiers of the 20th New York State Militia in May 1865
