Letters and postcards written home by Smith, a Chicago, Illinois native, to his mother Mary Smith and sister Esther Smith discussing his experiences in France as a soldier with Company E of the 415th Telephone Battalion. Topics include purchasing souvenirs, getting new members for his unit, waiting for assignments, and Thanksgiving dinner celebration in France. Smith, who organized the Christmas dinner for his camp, wrote a letter discussing work producing a holiday dinner including his attempts to purchase turkey, trying to get eggs from the Red Cross, and his evaluation of the dinner. Smith also used his time in France to tour the country and collected souvenir postcard books from the towns he visited. There are photographic cards of Paris, Verdun, Bordeaux, Chateauroux, Orleans, Reims, and Chatau Thierry.
