Photograph of Daniel H. Mayer who served as a pilot with the Army Air Forces during World War II and was killed during the Sicily Campaign. The photograph is a black and white portrait of Mayer in uniform, presumably taken prior to him leaving for Europe. Mayer's mother, Dorothy Stearns Mayer, was originally from Monroe, Wisconsin and eventually settled in Jacksonville, Florida. Mayer enlisted with the Army Air Corps on December 12, 1941 in Dade County Florida. He saw action in North Africa and Sicily and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and Oakleaf Cluster for his actions. He was first reported missing in action on August 3, 1943 while participating in the Sicilian Campaign and was later declared killed in action on November 14.
