Theater piece for trombone player, commissioned and performed by Stuart Dempster. Choreography by Elizabeth Harris. Dempster lights candles, plays inside the piano, plays instrument through funnels to make flames flicker, uses garden sprinkler with hoses and trombone mouthpieces, then hides under piano, crawls inside piano, twirls hose overhead. Three versions appear on this disc: a) Track 2 (17:03). From a San Francisco Tape Music Center performance, 1966. Tape portion realized at Columbia-Princeton. Performance is preceeded by an announcement, probably from KPFA radio (4:01); b) Tracks 3-4 (16:54, :57). Recording heavily edited, with tape portion removed. Track 4 is additional segment or possibly tape component. c) Track 5 (17:37). Performance February 1966, but different from track 2. Another version on CD172.
