The collection consists primarily of Dr. Griffith's correspondence with scholars studying scientific communication and information science, chiefly during the 1970s and 1980s. Other materials include early drafts and edited manuscripts of Dr. Griffith's articles, several lectures, a memoir dating from 1972, reports to the dean of the College of Information Studies offering summaries of Griffith's activities during the 1970s and 1980s, and copies of some of Dr. Griffith's publications.
Belver Griffith was a professor at Drexel University's College of Information Studies beginning in 1962. He was widely known in the field of information studies for his work on scholarly communication in the sciences, bibliometrics, and citation analysis. He was also instrumental in establishing the doctoral degree program in information science at Drexel. Dr. Griffith became an emeritus professor in 1992 and died in 1999.
