These records of the Virginia City, Montana Territory, post office consist of an account ledger (October 1869-September 1872), kept by postmaster Hezekiah L. Hosmer, recording costomer purchases of stamps, wrappers, box rent, etc.
This collection consists of a one volume account ledger which recorded customer purchases of stamps, wrappers, and box rent (October 1, 1869-September 15, 1872).
Virginia City, Montana Territory, the site of a rich placer gold strike, was the first town incorporated in Montana (1864) and the territorial capital (1865-1874). Hezekiah L. Hosmer, a chief justice of Montana Territory (1864-1868). served as postmaster of Virginia City from 1868 until he left the territory for San Francisco in 1872.
