Arranged chronologically by legislative year (biennially since 1995-1996), thereunder by disposition.
Any citizen or group of citizens in Massachusetts may petition the General Court for legislative action on any subject. Such a petition is endorsed by a member of the legislature for presentation to the General Court, where through the legislative process it is unpassed or passed, subject to the governor's approval or veto. Bills that fail to pass in the House of Representatives are filed with the House clerk for one year.
House unpassed legislation includes bills, amendments and substitutions, and constitutional amendments. Series also includes resolutions and orders (whether or not passed); also petitions, gubernatorial messages, annual reports, special reports, communications, recommendations, and authorizations for wire taps. Documents are those with final House disposition, even when of Senate origin. Vetoed bills not overridden are included; pocket vetoes are included through 1964 (except 1855-1886) only--for others see record for: Massachusetts. Governor's Legislative Office. Pocket vetoes ((M-Ar)459X).
Earlier and additional Revolutionary files are found in: Massachusetts archives collection ((M-Ar)45X), especially v. 180-188: Revolution petitions, 1775-1783.
Bill packets for proposed legislation containing petitions relating to slavery removed from original sequence for digitization and now stored separately.
Microfilm (v. 1) included with series.
Microfilm available in Archives reading room.
House journal ((M-Ar)532).
Additional items properly assigned to this series (1692-1799, including to 1780 documents relating to either house of the General Court--and a few related earlier items) may be located in: Massachusetts archives collection by consulting the Massachusetts archives collection database, an electronic index to documents from selected series volumes. Each document entry contains vol. no., beginning page (i.e., document) and inclusive page nos., record series no./title (with creating agency code/name), legislative or executive journal citation, creation and/or other date, summary of contents, and lists of referenced: (1) geographic locations, (2) personal names, and (3) topics (including Indian tribal names, newspaper titles, ship names, and corporate bodies); also data on document generation (original, attested copy, transcript), signatories/signatures, and seals.
