Series I. Entire text of agreement: The two cities of Miyazaki and Virginia Beach have been actively engaged in various international exchange projects such as homestay, cultural and educational exchange since 1985. / There are many similarities between the two cities, in population, economy, industry, climate, geography and culture / Mayors Teizo Nagatomo of Miyazaki City and Meyra [sic] Oberndorf of Virginia Beach, City, meeting here in Virginia Beach on July 22, 1991, proclaim that we wish to foster further the relationship and strengthen the ties of friendship between two cities year by year. / And accordingly, we sign this agreement.
Series I. The agreement related to International Friendship cities between The City of Virginia Beach, Virginia, U.S.A. and The City of Miyazaki, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. Side by side agreement in English and Kanji signed July 22, 1991 by Meyera E. Oberndorf, Mayor of City of Virginia Beach and Teizo Nagatomo, Mayor, City of Miyazaki.
Series II. Personal scrapbook of participant in the Virginia Beach Official Delegation to Miyazaki City in Celebration of 10th anniversary of Sister City, October, 19-27. 2002. Includes photographs, fliers, official materials and other memorabilia (in Japanese and English) of the 10th anniversary celebration, as well as memorabilia of participation in the 5th International Conference for Volunteerism.
Virginia Beach and Miyazaki collaborate as sister cities, with visits between the cities. Both cities have particularly been interested in work voluntarism.
Library staff member and volunteer coordinator Mary Lovell Swetnam participated as a member of the official Virginia Beach delegation to Miyazaki in October 2002.
