This set of three posters produced by John Cage and Calvin Sumsion was made to advertise the premiere performance of Cage and Lejaren Hiller collaborative piece HPSCHD in which they utilized computer technology. The performance was realized at the University of Illinois in Urbana on May 16, 1969 (cf. Kostelanetz).
Two of the posters include credits for Sumsion and Gary Viskupic; one does not include credits. Poster [1]: several images in various colors printed on lavender paper; no credits. Posters [2] and [3]: mainly white silk screen on black paper, with images in various colors. The center image of poster [2] shows Cage as a dragonslayer. Words in the upper part of each poster: HPSCHD Cage Hiller Nameth Sumsion. Words in the lower part: may 16, 8.p.m.-midnight, assembly hall, university of illinois general admission. In the margin of poster [2]: design: c.j. sumsion, illustration, g. viskupic. In the margin of poster [3]: design: c.j. sumsion.
American composer, performer, graphic artist, poet, and writer. Cage was born Sept. 5, 1912 in Los Angeles; he died Aug. 12, 1992 in New York.
