A resident of New Albany, Indiana, George H. Austin served in the Union Army as captain of Co. B, Second Kentucky Infantry. Austin's correspondence to family members and his commanding officer describes his confinement as a prisoner of war at Richmond, Va. and Salisbury, N.C. between July 17, 1861 and August 12, 1862. Also included are subsequent letters describing his duties as a brigade staff officer in the Army of the Cumberland at Nashville, Tenn. and the headquarters for Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio. This collection includes one original letter and five transcribed letters.
