The Indiana Partners of the Americas records include meeting minutes, agendas, publications, correspondence, newspaper clippings, bylaws, guidelines, projects, memberships, and other related materials pertaining to the Partners from 1965-2008.
The Americas Program, directly influenced by John F. Kennedy, began in the early 1960's to establish a way to involve private citizens in the goals and programs of the Alliance for Progress. Partnership structure was chosen based upon the success of several informal partnerships, initiated in 1963 with support from the Organization of American States, that already linked U.S. states to Latin American states and nations. The Indiana Partners of the Americas was organized in 1964 within the Agency for International Development of the U.S. Department of State. The Partners is an international volunteer program, which provides opportunities for schools, state agencies, civic groups, commercial and industrial interests and private individuals in each country to work together on self-help projects. In the years since its formation, the Partners have originated and carried out thousands of projects between the Americas. Projects and activities include culture and the arts, education, business and industry, health, sports, agriculture, and journalism to name a few. Except for travel funds for materials, personnel, and a modest administrative grant, all Partners activities are carried out with private funds and efforts.
