Meyera E. Oberndorf, February 10, 1941-March 13, 2015, was the 23rd mayor of Virginia Beach, serving from July 1, 1988-January 1, 2009. She was Virginia Beach's longest servicng, the first directly elected mayor, and the first female mayor. First elected to City Council in 1976, she was the first woman to hold elected office in the more than 300-year history of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County. She served as Vice Mayor from 1986-1988. Mrs. Oberndorf was been active in Virginia Beach civic activities and government for many years. Prior to being elected to City Council, she served on the Virginia Beach Library Board from 1966 - June 30, 1976, and as chair 1967-1976. She was appointed to the Virignia State Library Board, 2009-2012. During her terms as mayor, Mrs. Oberndorf was active in national organizations for mayors. Newsweek magazine named her as one of the "25 Most Dynamic Mayors in the U.S." Mrs. Oberndorf ran for state Senate in 1979 and 1981.
Mrs. Oberndorf was defeated by Will Sessoms in the 2008 election. In December 2008 City Council voted unanimously to rename Central Library as the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library.
