Sean Gervasi Africa collection

17 boxes ; 27 x 40 x 13 cm.
Sean David Orlando Gervasi (1932-1996), economist, academic, foreign policy advocate and member of Concerned Citizens' Committee on Africa, worked for the United Nations Office of the Commissioner for Namibia (under Nobel Peace Prize winner Sean MacBride) and the United Nations Centre against Apartheid. His research critiqued the impact of investment in Southern Africa. In December 1975 he issued a report on the continuing escalation in Angola by South Africa and involvement of the United States in supplying arms. In July 1977 he testified in Congress on arms sales to South Africa. In the 1980s he probed Pretoria's violent war of destabilization against newly independent neighboring states of Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, and critiqued constructive engagement policies. The collection includes professional and personal letters and papers of Gervasi, the UN, and leading Africanists and politicians as well as unpublished typescripts, extensive news clippings, and a wide range of publications and unpublished reports. The bulk of the collection focuses on Southern Africa, but there is also substantial coverage of the Horn of Africa, Zaire (Democratic Republic of Congo), Libya and other countries. Correspondents include Sean MacBride, Theo-Ben Gurirab (SWAPO), Basil Davidson, George Houser, David Wiley, Ben Magubane and many others. Deposited by his widow, Heather Cottin.
