Consists of a lithographic copy of the military commission for Israel Putnam, dated 1775 and signed by John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia.
Israel Putnam was a veteran of the French and Indian War; commander in the Detroit Expedition against Pontiac; and a Major-General in the Revolutionary War, having fought at Bunker Hill Harlem Heights and commanded American forces at the Battle of Long Island. Putnam County, Tennessee, is named for him.
