The fiftieth anniversary of the construction of the Great Stone Dam (also known as Merrimack River Dam) was celebrated Sept. 16-17, 1895. School and industry closed as the celebration began with the ringing of bells at sunrise. A 17-gun salute greeted the governor and a parade occurred the following day.
